Well, folks, at last: Here's my english review of the SAGA-concert at Neu-Isenburg's "Hugenottenhalle" (march 24th 2003).
A very special THANK YOU to USCHI  for her really great translation - I wouldn't have been able to put it into English myself.

Booming synthesizer sound, howling, whistling - and then they walk again into the limelight: the Canadian cult band Saga is rocking in Neu-Isenburg's Hugenottenhalle.

With the title song of the current Marathon CD, Saga are making their programme clear: a run through 25 years of music history is awaiting the 1200 enthusiastic fans. No traces of exhaustion, no embarrassing avoidance of high tones, no relying on the fan choir - already during the opener Michael Sadler sings strongly through the most difficult passages. Proves: there won't be a gentle pace, tonight there is a party.

In black shirt, black trousers Michael Sadler is racing across the stage, gets his band colleagues going. Guitar player Ian Crichton scintillates with wild solos, engaging in the famously notorious unison duels with keyboard player Jim Gilmour who whirls behind his keyboard castle, delivering the second singing voice at his best. The background formed by the impressive foundation layed by drummer Steve Negus and bass player Jim Crichton.

Sound problems like during the first concerts of the tour - nothing of that kind can be heard in Neu-Isenburg. Chrystal clear sound at the mixer. Even directly in front of the stage the toughest fans get pure quality in their ears. There is also something for the eyes on offer: the light show - simple but effective. During 'On The Loose' the Saga writing appears on the stage backdrop. The mythical creature 'golden boy' is flying during 'Careful Where You Step' through a glittering starry sky. Then comes a purple cloud shaped structure for 'How Are You?'.

After 40 minutes there follows what Saga fans for decades have been waiting for: Jim Gilmour announces the legendary Chapters, a musical science fiction story around the 'golden boy'. In the Hugenottenhalle the band plays the first eight Chapters. Unabridged, one immediately after another without long breaks. Band and audience are dripping with sweat.

Only one time that evening were Michael and his lads 'booed' - when he came back on stage for the encore wearing an 'Eintracht Frankfurt' tricot. A short lifting of the eyebrows, grinning like a Cheshire cat - and Michael Sadler is topless, quickly grabbing his shirt again. No time left for fastening: So with lots to see for the female audience he rocked through the last three numbers.

Saga again get everything out of their fans. Clapping thunder during 'Wind Him Up', flying hair during 'Runaway'. After precisely 2 hours the Canadians finish with 'See Them Smile' a real concert highlight and by now everyone in the audience smiles happily.

Unanimous opinion: 'That was fantastic. Catch you the next time round.'
