SAGA - 10,000 Days

SAGA
10,000 DAYS

It’s easy to work out: 10,000 days add up to roughly 30 years. A long time in the life of a musician, especially if he’s spent the last three decades in the limelight. Saga have been a known quantity on the rock music scene since 1977, responsible for countless hits and classics. Their latest album release, 10,000 Days, is vocalist Michael Sadler’s farewell. Without artistic differences, without bad feelings, but in friendship and for purely private reasons. “I just felt that after 30 years of devoting myself to the band and the fans, it was time to move on to the next chapter of my life and start focussing on my family,” he explains. “I will continue to be actively involved in music, but in a much different way.”

Sadler is saying goodbye with an offering that could hardly be more typical of Saga. Their sound has become the band’s trademark, unmistakeable in every respect. At the same time, Saga have continued to develop over the past 30 years, permanently reinventing themselves without neglecting the popular trademarks of their atmospherically intense style. It’s still Sadler’s charismatic voice, guitarist Ian Crichton’s virtuoso guitar, Jim Gilmour’s amazing keyboard sounds, and bassist Jim Crichton’s great compositional talent and qualities as a producer that mark Saga’s sound. Together with their current fantastic drummer Brian Doerner, Saga form a tight unit that cleverly alternates between traditional and contemporary elements. Which is exactly how 10,000 Days works. “There are a few moments on the album where we tried a couple of new things, but overall I think it’s classic Saga à la 2007!” Sadler summarises an album that takes its listeners on an exciting journey, from the opener ‘Lifeline’ to the final track, ‘It Never Ends’. Saga songs are multi-dimensional, have depth and hide numerous sonic adventures, waiting to be discovered underneath the surface of the obvious.

Despite Sadler’s departure, the lyrics on 10,000 Days present the usual diverse mix that Saga are popular for. ‘More Than I Deserve’ is Sadler’s explicit message to his fans, friends and colleagues. He says: “That is my personal thank-you!” Otherwise, he picks up subjects that cover a wide range of contents between humorous and deep, “from politicians on ‘Can’t You See Me Now?’, moving forward with your life on ‘It Never Ends’ to even a tongue-in-cheek comment about tour itineraries, called ‘Book of Lies’.” Saga consciously decided against a concept album, although the title may suggest that kind of direction. “This album was never meant to be overly cerebral in nature,” Sadler points out, adding: “Although there are a few things to think about, it’s meant to be entertaining more than anything else!”

That’s one of the reasons why this album is not meant as a sad farewell, but as a record that the fans will first and foremost enjoy as much as the band members enjoyed recording it. “It was mostly fun, but I have to say that it was a very strange feeling when I finished singing the final track,” Saga’s frontman confesses. “I just looked at Jim Crichton and said, “I guess that’s it!” and he said “I guess so” and then – silence!”

The fans won’t get to feel much of this silence on tour: Saga’s autumn concerts guarantee a mélange of classics, unplugged versions, new tracks, plus a number of surprises. The audience will definitely have a great time and can look forward to another 10,000 days of fun with Saga’s music, irrespective of what the band’s future will hold. Just as they did during the past 30 years: Things promise to remain exciting in the Saga camp!
